Navigating Problems on Placement

Join us for an interactive workshop designed to empower practice educators with practical strategies for supporting students who face challenges during placement.

Network and share experiences with other practice educators across the regional partnership.

The session will be delivered by Dr Deborah Hadwin. Deborah is an assistant professor in social work at the University of Birmingham, where she Programme Director for Practice Education, as well as teaching on the BA and MA social work programmes. She previously worked as an academic at De Montfort University where she was lead for practice learning and delivered CPD for practice educators across the East Midlands region.

Deborah has been supporting social work students for over 20 years both as a practice educator and tutor.  She developed and revised the Problems on Placement process for both universities and worked with many students and practice educators to effectively resolve these often-difficult situations. 

Prior to her academic career, Deborah worked within local authorities for 18 years predominantly in children’s services before moving to a learning and development role.  She completed her PhD in 2022 which considered the practical and ethical issues for social workers working with separated migrant children reaching adulthood.

Deborah is a coach with BASW Professional Support Services.
