Mental health awareness training - An introduction to Mental Health Issues

This training is open to social work practitioners across Adult and Children's Services within the West Midlands Social Work Teaching Partnership who would like a greater understanding of mental health issues at an introductory level to inform their general social work practice. Please see below our Partner organisations. 

Areas covered in this training include: 

•  increasing understanding of the language and terminology relating to mental health.
• considering mental health from the medical, social, and psychological perspective.
• An introduction to depression, bipolar disorder, psychosis and personality disorder.
• To consider the key principles of the Mental Capacity Act.
• An introduction to the civil sections of the Mental Health Act.

The training will be online and will include a mixture of presentation, video clips, quiz and discussions.

About the trainer: Martin Gilbert, DIPSW, Advanced Certificate in ASW/AMPH, BPhil, PGCE. Senior Learning & Development Officer Birmingham City Council. Martin has been a Social Worker since 1999 and an Approved Social Worker since 2002, converting to an Approved Mental health Professional in 2008. Initially within a community mental health team and then within crisis resolution and home treatment work. From 2010-2022 Martin supported the development and qualification in AMHP practice in Birmingham. He has been a national Mental health First Aid trainer since 2018. Martin has led on conferences Deprivation of Liberty, Criminal Justice in Mental Health and Impacts of Mental health on Children. Martin’s primary area of interest remains mental health and mental capacity and he is a strong advocate of a blended approach to learning, trusting adult learning principles of andragogy and citizen/carer involvement to support practice
