About the Event

Beth Tarleton is a senior lecturer at the School for Policy Studies at the University of Bristol.  She had been doing research about support for parents with learning disabilities and learning difficulties for twenty years.  Her research finding were included in the Good Practice Guidance on Working with parents with a learning disability  (bristol.ac.uk/media-library/sites/sps/documents/wtpn/FINAL 2021 WTPN UPDATE OF THE GPG.pdf). She was co-ordinator of the Working Together with Parents network, (Working Together with Parents Network) which provides free support for professionals working with parents with learning disabilities, for 18 years.

This research seminar will discuss the findings of the 'How do Adult services engage with Parents with learning disabilities? Project' which investigated exactly what the project title suggests.  It looked at how 5 local authorities, 4 with joint working protocols, recognised and responded to parents with diagnosed learning disabilities and milder/borderline learning disabilities (learning difficulties).  The seminar will discuss the different ways in which the term 'learning disabilities' was understood and the way in which the Care Act was used to provide or not provide support to parents.
