About the Event
This research seminar is open to members of the West Midlands Social Work Teaching Partnership. Please see below our Partner organisations.
Join us for a thought-provoking 1-hour lecture, as David Shipley shares his personal experiences of imprisonment and explores the research surrounding this critical issue. We will delve into the far-reaching consequences that parental imprisonment can have on children and young people, highlighting the challenges they face in navigating this complex and often stigmatized reality.
Following the lecture, we will investigate case studies of individuals with direct or indirect experience of prison. To conclude, there will be a Q&A session, allowing you to pose any questions or concerns related to David's prison experiences and the broader topics we have explored. This is an opportunity to engage with a thought leader in this space and gain a deeper understanding of the issues affecting families and communities.
David Shipley is a writer, speaker, academic and former prisoner. During his time inside he became radicalised by the prison system and determined to raise understanding of its flaws and how it harms people. Since his release from prison in 2021 he has worked as a consultant prison inspector for the Ministry of Justice, writes regularly for the Spectator and often discusses prison and justice issues on the BBC, TalkTV, Sky News and LBC. David is also a postgraduate researcher at the University of Southampton where he is investigating the experiences of children with a parent in prison.
